A follow up on my previous post (and the whole point - missed/not fathomed by some).

Here's a bit from Nick Hornby's The Complete Polysyllabic Spree (do read it). He's writing on his experience of reading Dennis Lehane's Prayers for Rain. But that's not the point (not for this post, at least).

Sometimes, when you walk into a pub in the center of town mid-evening, you get the feeling that you’ve missed the moment: all the after-work drinkers have gone home, and the late night drinkers haven’t arrived, and there are empty glasses lying around (and the ashtrays are full, if you’re drinking in a civilized country), and you didn’t make any of the mess…

P.S. Nick Horby makes a walk-on appearance in Sarah Vowell’s Assassination Vacation as a smoker from London called Nick.

Honey, don't you think you are old enough now to make your own point without taking assistance from Messrs. Hornby, Godard et al?

Priya, fortunately (or unfortunately) I don't belong to that (or any) school of thought that shudders to take "assistance" from Messrs.Somebody or Anybody. If I am making a point (or trying to), it's because I am pretty convinced about it (or else, I simply don't make a point). But I don't need to dash off to some strange corner of the world if I see others share my conviction. It doesn't take away from the "my-ness" of the conviction. I simply want to make a point (from time to time) - not claim the point to be simply mine.

Besides, I had had a hope that some people might be convinced to pick up a copy of "The Complete Polysyllabic Spree" next time they drop in at the neighbourhood bookstore. That, too, was a point. Obviously, completely missed (My fault, for not having included a backcover blurb from Salman Rushdie or Iam McEwan).

Well, a follow up post on the original point and this impassioned defense trying to make another makes one wonder about the new point (or two) you are making about your points being part of world-heritage.

Also what is the point of being unpaid touts of other people making points?

The same point being made twice-over? Such desperation can only be indulged.

I'll leave it at that. Reign in, woman.
